A quick message to say hello and to congratulate Bob on this new forum. I see this as being a really great resource for all forum admins. I've been online for more years than I care to count but as a hint, my first online experience came via the use of a 300 baud modem. I set up my first forum on phpBB2, back in 2004. I moved to vBulletin in February 2005 and added three more forums over the years. In November of last year, I moved all four sites to Invision Power Board and have since added a fifth site. I am a former vBSEO user and have modified some files to try to optimize IPB. I'm looking forward to the changes we'll see in IPB 3.1.0, too! So I hope to bec…

http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/google-local-lost.jpg Now, don’t get me wrong. Google Local and Google Maps are extremely valuable tools that I use a few times every week. But every so often they get something wrong–so wrong, in fact, that I’m not sure where the wires got crossed. Let’s assume I wanted to stop by a local pub on a Saturday night. Maybe I’d want to check out the website first to see what was going on, so I’d type in the name and town [molly blooms amityville] and get this result: http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/molly-blooms.jpg For those of you who might not remember, I live in New York (more specifically on Long Isla…

  3. My name is Bob. I've been developing and selling forums for 15 years. Over that time I learned a bunch about what it takes to get traffic to a site and what it takes to keep users coming back. I opened this community to share my SEO tips and learn new SEO techniques from the users. You can never learn too much.

If you’d ask anyone who’s been using facebook extensively will tell you that the real facebook life is far from those things you did, its more fun and frolic. But I agree with you – we never knew. Because every social network is heavily community focused, the traditional methods of banner ads, were tried but never effective. The community, is the core in any social media network and ads mostly meant “distraction” to them. And since the geeks overtook any other segment of the society on the social networks, it was hard to please them with ads, as they wer…

http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/editor-links.jpg There’s a trend of editors in the SEO world uptight about linking out. A friend in the industry who guest blogs recently told me that he was told by his editor he couldn’t promise links to contributors who participated in guest interviews. Others have been seeing the same, and writers I work with have seen their editors take forever about updating bios [with the attendant links] … WTF? The big three engines encourage you to link out to quality sites and resources. http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/wordpress-cache.jpg The question for today’s post comes from Meg Geddes aka NetMeg. She wants to know more about setting up caching on Wordpress. Ok, let’s get the big question out of the way. What is caching and why do you want it? Basically, caching will store copies of pages that have already been served from your webserver so that they don’t have to be called from the database every time they are requested and don’t have to be parsed through the PHP engine. The whole process is very similar to browser caching, except it works in reverse. Caching can be beneficial if you have a very busy website with lots of traffic o…

I touched on this briefly in my Shopping Cart SEO Tips post, but there are a couple of different conditions that require some finesse so let’s run through the most common cases: Product Goes Temporarily Out of Stock: If a product goes out of stock temporarily, but you do expect to get it back in stock, you’ll want to leave the page up …

Some years ago, when social media came in as the new thing buzz word, the first to get a frown on their face were News agencies. Pundits predicted that social media will take over news agencies as popular news sources, and most of that already happened withing this short span of time. Iran happened, President’s election, and all those social media cover stories in between and its believed that Newspapers have lost the…

Its easy, and anyone who can write emails can do it quick and dirty, let their thoughts be known the world and get feedback in no time. Now, don’t get me wrong but I’m entirely positive when I say that the noise is more than signal among blogs world wide. If you were to categorize bloggers based on their productivity (which itself is a debatable term) then there would be a dominating amount of “strugglers” than “achievers”. Agree ? No ? Okay, lets see where it goes. I’m taki…

Though many a times a re-tweeted URL can be safe and secure, there have been concerns where a shortened URL may lead you to a spammy website or an “unsuitable” website, especially in the cases of first tweet. And most of the times one cannot make out from the tweet itself as to whether the site being redirected to via the short URL is okay to visit or not. I personally have come across situations where I’ve clicked …

http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/better-auto-generated-text.jpg Over the past two weeks we’ve taken a look at different aspects of copywriting, including aspects such as the value of good copy, outsourcing your content, and tools to make your content better. To round out the series I thought I’d touch on auto-generated content and how to make it better. To be clear, using auto-generated text will fall into the gray-hat to black-hat side of the equation. Again understand that it may be technically in compliance with the concept of unique content, but it isn’t what Google really has in mind when they say “create unique content.” So don’t mix it with your…

http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/top-dollar-copy.jpg It took Leo Tolstoy six years to craft the 460,000-word War and Peace. A cheap copywriting service could churn out as many words for your website for just $9,200 (at 2 cents a word) over the course of a few weeks. Added to this, standards of literacy and attention spans on the web are plummeting. We’re all illiterate More than half of American college students nearing graduation can’t understand the arguments in newspaper editorials. Although it’s not the most optimal platform, there’s no question that it makes it easier to run a website. I was recently asked by Brian Clark of CopyBlogger to review Scribe SEO a new service/plugin for Wordpress, one that was designed to help you do a better job of optimizing your posts. Scribe SEO is plugin that works with Wordpress to analyze your posts, give you information about them, and make suggestions about improving your post from an SEO Perspective. If you’re using Thesis, the plugin interfaces without a hitch. While I haven’t tried it, I und…

http://www.wolf-howl.com/wp-content/uploads/wordpress-tools.jpg Earlier this week there was a post on SEOBullsh*t that talked about how Wordpress was inadequate for anything more than a personal blog. Since I’m a big advocate of Wordpress and use it more than any other platform, I thought I’d provide a little balance to the argument. Let’s get to the core of the argument. Can Wordpress scale to handle high volume sites with lots of traffic? I can say that, yes, it can … as long as you are careful about how you implement it. The plugins are one of the biggest issues with using Wordpress. They can solve a lot of problems; however, sometimes they can create just as m…
