Twitter is officially taking the plunge into its long awaited “business model”, probably this week and this might be big as we ever suspected it to be. How will Twitter handle the money, and are you going to be a part of it – is the big question now. Here are some “calculated guesses”. 1. Brands will embrace Twitter as an effective communication channel like never before. This is going to get all the brands out there looking to take the plunge into Twitter on a high. Promoted tweets will give them the opportunity to communicate effectively with the Twitter audience, with minimum effort. As of now, its not easy for any brand to mark their presence on Twitter. They have a long and time consuming process to go through, which they’ll be glad to bypass with the Promoted tweets feature. Communication will become effective and brand engagement will soar up to higher levels. The possibilities are huge, and it will only be a matter of time before we see which brand/brands pull it off well. 2. Twitter will become the best buzz generation tool online, available yet. Period. Let me re-phrase that. Online advertising will get a whole new platform to play with. AdSense and AdWords will no longer be the only options. We’re talking about a much broader and intimate way of communication and advertising like we’ve never seen before. And the metrics of calculation will be factors like emotional attachment, and brand mentions rather than clicks and click throughs. Those are the things of the past. They aptly should be. 3. Not all brands will jump in to the bandwagon. They’ll need time to think. Don’t get me wrong, but not all brands will find this deal interesting. May be starbucks or McD will be among the first few to jump in but not all brands will find value in it. I think there has to be more done with “Location based services” that will unleash more opportunities here, but for the start, I really don’t know if that’s the path Twitter is taking. 4. The noise to signal ratio on Twitter will widen. Noise ? What noise ? I’m sure some of you will ask this question, but if you’re anything like a brand or company, that term must be plugged right into your head asap, because you’re going to hear and discuss about it more often than anytime else in your entire life. We’re going to be talking about communication effectiveness and noise-to-signal ratios here, and brands are increasingly going to talk about ROI on the base of noise-to-signal ratio. I love that term. And you better get used to it. 5. We’ll use more hashtags for brands. That was obvious right ? So what do a regular twitter user like me and you do to get noticed by brands looking for mentions on Twitter ? Search for the tags and voila – there you are ! #starbucks is cool, #windows sucks etc. 6. Some power users might even make some money out of it. I admit, I’m a little grey on this part but I have an inclination to believe that this is going to materialize sometime soon. If not all, some power users like the most re-tweeted, most-mentioned, and most engaging tweeps are going to be of value to brands trying to engage with the larger audience. And I don’t know if they’re going to be hired but something along the lines might just happen. For losers like me, let’s speculate on whether this is right or wrong for now, so that one fine day, we’ll also be hired http://www.dailybloggr.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif 7. The new standard measurement factor for a tweet / twitter user will be “resonance value”. Resonance value for a brand would be in layman’s words the mileage a brand would get out of the whole thing. The number of retweets, mentions, good factor, and all that rolled into one fancy word – “Resonance value”. Like I said, get used to it boy ! 8. Facebook will copy the Twitter monetization model and call it something lame, soon after. Mr.Zuckerberg, nothing personal here, but we know you well. So you better find a better name this time, or you know what’s gonna happen ! Oh ! Wait, you don’t really care, right ? So that’s it folks. The next big thing on social media is here. Promoted Tweets – the answer to the long asked question – What’s the monetization model for Twitter ? Let’s hope that this is going to be a win-win situation for brands and users alike, or its going to be one big screw up. Moral of the story – Nothing much. Two fancy words – “Noise to signal ratio” and “Resonance”. Take it home please.
