Many folks think that blogging is easy. After all, its just a matter of writing down what’s in your mind – rants as they call it.

But blogging for money is different. Completely. Its not about writing your mind, its as responsible and important as publishing a magazine. Just that, here you’re the owner and the author (and everything in between). There’s both good and bad to it. Good – You get all the laurels. Bad – You get all the blame if you screw up.

Okay, so how can you make money blogging ? Is it really possible ?

1 – What are you good at writing / talking about ?

There are two ways to find this out. First, find out what you are good at. Some folks like science, some like sports, so you figure that out. Ideally, you might want to select a topic that you like the most and will never run out of ideas talking about.

Second way to go about is to find out what people want. Say, you like talking about sports, but there aren’t much people to hear, so take the other way round. Find out what topic (that you know) have more readers, and then stick to it.

2 – Do you see yourself as a popular blogger in a year’s time ?

Think hard about it. Do you “really” see yourself as a star ? Or is it that you want to make some quick money and get away with it? If you thought blogging is for making quick money, you’re wrong. Believe me, its not even close to those fancy dreams. Takes a lot of patience, time and energy to even make that first cheque. So unless you see yourself as a popular blogger in a year’s time, you better don’t do it. There’s no semi-professional blogger.

3 – Write a lot of articles, creating an article base, before you actually publish

Typically what people do is that they write that one or two articles, publish and wait for the magic to happen. Which unfortunately doesn’t happen that quick. There’s an alternate way to do this, with much more satisfaction. Write as much as fifty articles as possible. But do not publish them. Write them for yourself from all the reading that you do and research.

Once you think you’re good to go, publish them in twos. Two articles per day, consistently on your blog. When reader’s see the consistency and the volume of articles, they’re definitely going to get interested and stick around. And that’s exactly what you wanted, isn’t it ? Also, you don’t have the worry that you’ll run out of articles in between.

4 – Create a complete Editorial plan for the year ahead

Sounds too much to do ? Well, that’s why you call yourself a professional blogger. Editorial plans and long term planning help a lot. Its however, a fact that you might have to write about recent news articles, which you can’t possible draft earlier on. To work around this, leave spaces for “Recent News based articles” in your editorial calendar. Schedule already written articles by date and publish them accordingly. Follow your editorial calendar closely so that you don’t miss out on any dates.

5 – Understand the meaning of “Professional”, and take it seriously

Many bloggers call themselves professional for reasons unknown. In my opinion, a professional blogger is one who has blogging as his profession, as his lively hood. I’m not a professional blogger, simply for the reason that I don’t blog for money. I blog for passion, for education. But if you want to be a professional blogger, you better take it seriously, than being a “yet another guy” in the block. Getting professional demands that you dedicate more time to blogging, and do your homework and research, and not be a “just like that” blogger.

Now, the truth is that there are very less professional bloggers in the world today. Many of them who claim to be professional bloggers do have a fall-back mechanism, or a job on the other side, should you fail to do well in blogging. So, if you’re getting into professional blogging, think again. Its not tough but requires a lot of thinking, planning and execution with dedication. Or you end up earning some silly bucks with AdSense and get tired easily. You decide what you want to be.
