Couldn’t think of a better title. Pretty sure you got the idea already but let me explain my perspective. May be you find some interesting insights along the way.

http://www.nataliedee.com/122607/youre-in-for-a-lifetime-of-disappointment.jpgAm sure you’ve been to interviews. Job interviews, Visa interviews, Exam interviews…that kind ?

And many folks are pretty intimidated by the idea of interviews. Like dead serious about them, so much that its almost like a life and death situation. I was always curious to know why. Still am.

To me interviews or any tests of those kind were interesting observations for one reason. Its an opportunity for me to measure and find out how insecure other people were. If I were at a job interview, the nervous bunch would be very obvious. The more nervous people, the more my chances of doing well at the interview. Sounds selfish but the reality is that I couldn’t help them, even if I wished.

I get nervous too. But its easy for me to get over it. I ask my self this question – “What’s the worse that could happen ?” I make a list of things, prioritize them and analyze them. From what I’ve seen I would be nervous over a list of things that were really silly if thought from outside the bracket. And I pick the worst thing that could happen and I prepare myself to accept it.

For instance, if its an interview, what’s the worst that could happen ? I might not do well at it ? Here’s how the thought process goes.

Would I do well at the interview ?

What can make me disappoint the interviewee ?

The fact that they might find me a mis match to their expectations ?

The fact that I’m less qualified to their expectations ?

May be they’ll find out if I lied about something ?

They might find someone else interesting, and I might not be able to match up ?

They might find me boring ?

I could go on and on. But here’s the thing. Imagine that you’re someone other than the interviewee or the interviewer and think from his perspective. What are the answers to the above questions ?

What can make me disappoint the interviewee ? – Anything can. Most importantly, the fact that I’m tensed. get over it first.

The fact that they might find me a mis match to their expectations ? I couldn’t possibly be a 100% match. If I did, they would anyway find it out.

The fact that I’m less qualified to their expectations ? Had that been the case, you would’ve got screened out the first level.

May be they’ll find out if I lied about something ? I better don’t lie and rather be upfront.

They might find someone else interesting, and I might not be able to match up ? There’s only one post, and you just saw that the rest of them are tensed about it. If you’re tensed, then you end up being one them. Do I need that ?

So, you get the idea ? Its about accepting failure.

Once you are prepared to fail, you will never repeat it. Many of us are scared of failing. So they blindly assume that they’re perfect and submit themselves to the situation – ultimately struggling to accept the fact that they aren’t perfect.

So the way out is that you accept failure. The interesting thing about this is that you’d only find yourself failing once and you wouldn’t repeat it, because you learn so much from the first experience.

So let yourself go. Do assume that you’re perfect. You might be, but don’t hang on to it. Test waters, fail once, learn. Rinse and repeat. Shine.

Phew ! Hope that made sense.
