Have you ever wondered why you always see lot of people following professional bloggers, reading their posts sometimes twice or even thrice a day, commenting on every post of theirs, narrating their success stories to friends, setting them up as their idols and follow their ideals? Has it crossed your thoughts anytime as to whether to even notice those new blogs whose owners are desperately trying to get some traffic and subscriber base to sell their ideas and products online? Fish in an Ocean- Creating a new blog today, in this already exploded world of personal websites, and expecting a steady flow of readers to visit is next to impossible. Of course an already established blogger(like Darren!!) can create any number of new blogs(like DPS or FeelGooder) and lo-behold, there is traffic pouring and spilling over the new blog in minutes. But for a newcomer(like me) it is a rare chance of that happening anytime soon. We are all like a small fish in the ocean, trying to lure those big white sharks to dare visit our habitat. Intense Marketing Techniques – Can you imagine the extent I would go to market my blog if I had guest post from Darren Rowse??Probably I will make it a Featured Post and available on the Top of the list everyday for the next year or so. I would spread the word like crazy and get people notice my blog which has been one of the “chosen few” to get recognized by the ProBlogger himself!!!! It wouldn’t be wrong for me to say that this would be the same level of excitement and motivation I will have to receive a guest post from any professional blogger or writer. This will go a long way in promoting my site as well as resulting in a tremendous amount of inbound links to the author. New bloggers are always excited and raring to go and make their names known in the world of blogging, they take every possible measure to achieve this and will have a never-give-up attitude towards their new venture. Promote Affiliates – What best way to get more traffic to your affiliate links than by expanding your network of contacts? Guest Posts are expected to do exactly the same, it gets you new contacts and more traffic to your site. So how is Guest Posting on a New Blog different than any other? A well written Guest Post on a new blog always stands out from the other posts, gives the blog a new perspective and a fresh look. It doesn’t get lost among the hundred of other posts(like in other well established blogs) and also you can take it for granted that your post will be “indexed” in a manner that it will bring it up on the very first page of any search engine SERP. How to Pick & Choose – So finally we come to the question of how to pick a blog and choose to write a comment or a guest post or share the articles on your network? Not every new blog can be as promising as mentioned above, take that for granted. One needs to be selective and do some study on the blog before deciding to vouch for it. There are many online tools available which will give you a fair idea of the blog’s performance. Some factors that are key for the decision can be: 1. What is the ranking of the blog There are many schools of thought on what is the importance of a Google PageRank of a website, some say it is imperative, others are just naive about that idea. All said and done, every blogger tends to lean towards the possibility of improving his PR no matter what. I have another article related to this here – How to Improve Google PR 2. How much traffic is it generating Ultimate objective of a blogger’s post is to please his readers with new and unique stuff and thus get his attention to his/her blog on a regular basis. This means to convert those mindless readers into becoming “regulars” at your website. Traffic is very important for a blog to attain a good value, and this is what a comment or a guest post on a blog will achieve. You can read “10 Ways to Improve Traffic” here. 3. How often the author posts relevant articles A new blogger can be really enthusiastic about his blog and start publishing 2-3 posts every day in his initial period. But however, it is quite difficult to maintain this zeal and most of them tend to lose interest and move over to other things in life. The ones that stick on are the ones with zeal and motivation that matters for every blogger. When considering to comment or write a post on a blog, you need to see how old the blog is and how often the author publishes unique self written content. 4. Is the content of the blog original There is no hard-written rule against duplicating content on the web. There are some search engines which has the algorithm to identify these duplicate content and put a ban on the blog for copyrights. By giving credit to the original author, any blogger can reproduce his content in his own words and publish on his site. This is happening today and I would not like to ask you to stay away from those blogs. They are merely trying to spread the word and get more attention to the originality of the content. 5. Various networks the blog is being shared It pays to investigate how well the author has networked himself and his blog among the reputed blogging forums and social networking sites. More the followers and blog submissions, more will be the traffic and more will be the popularity of the blog. 6. “About Me” section of the author can be most revealing To understand the author and his objective, an updated “About” section of the blog will give a clear picture as to what the person is trying to achieve by creating and maintaining the blog. A start-up blogger will have an unclear picture of his final motto and this will be reflected in his statement.(like mine!!) 7. What is the blog’s “niche” One needs to be vary of the niche or the blogger’s interest in writing. Some topics might be “hot” but they may have limited audience (eg: Affiliate marketing in India might be limited to Indian communities). A more generic point of interest like “blogging” or “making money online” may have universal appeal and thus attract more visitors. 8. Does it have a Business Fan Page and how many followers or fans does it have As said earlier, an extensive networking by the author will always put his blog in the list of top websites. There are many blogging forums where one can submit or claim their website like technorati, DIGG, Reddit etc which give a blog a valid credential. 9. What are the Products or Services being advertised on the blog If the blog is having any of it’s own products or services up for sale, or even if the blogger has subscribed to an affiliate network to promote their products, it is good to review them and ensure that those fall in line with your blogging interest. If there is a whole lot of information on some pharmacy products and your blog is all about SEO and money making, they may not go well together and you may want to give a second thought before publishing a comment or a guest post. 10. Does it have a valid “WhoIs” information The “WhoIs” information of a blog is rather an ultimate giveaway of the blog’s ownership and it is good to know which server it is hosted upon and where it is hosted from geographically. Also it provides details of the owner of the blog with contact information which may not be available on the blog’s Contact form. You can make use of a several tools online to see these information. I personally use SiteTrail to get every detail of a blog. These factors can easily be determined within minutes and give you a fair idea if the blog is legit and if it happens to bring more revenue to your business by being a part of it. I am sure many of you will have several other factors that you consider before even attempting to visit a blog, do share your thoughts and most of us can benefit out of the same.
