Social Media gets a bit “too social” for the authorities here, and the latest to hit the news is this incident where a facebook user was “pretending” to be “Allah” (The God in Islam) and spread hate speech and false claims in the name of “Islam“. He had set up a page, posting quotes and verses from the Qur’an, which were supposedly offensive. Many people from the region complained to authorities about the facebook page, and as a result the authorities have requested facebook users of the region to block it. The page is currently offline (possibly because of the spam reports). He also declared writing a new book falsifying himself as a god. He spreads talk that is insulting to the prophets and to their holy stature. This is considered to be a felony according to the federal law. said Mohammad Al Ganem, TRA (Telecom Regulatory Authority) General Manager. The TRA authority in the UAE had allowed facebook and Twitter in the region without any known censor ships, unlike Orkut or Flickr, which are completely banned (YouTube partially banned). And now, this decision will be rethought if the rumors are true. In fact, HH Sheikh Mohammed the ruler of Dubai, UAE has official accounts on facebook and Twitter, and so does many media channels / newspapers / companies in the region. Facebook have been immensely popular in the middle east as well, with a large majority of the userbase being women. Now, the situation might call for a “review” of the whole social media channels allowed in the region. That would be sad. Its interesting to see how different regions of the world react to the social media revolution. Will UAE follow the Chinese stand of banning social networks completely ? Or would there be options to “selectively regulate” social media channels to suit the regions beliefs ? In that case, would it harm the real spirit of social media ? What are your thoughts ?
